Health officials are calling out to parents to be aware of Strep A, an infection that causes bacteria to colonise the throat and skin which in turn can result in a range of skin, soft tissue and respiratory tract infections. Many people can carry the infection without knowing about it but it can be easily spread to others who may become ill. Anyone can contract Strep A however it is more common in children than adults. When caught early it can be treated accordingly with antibiotics.

Is Strep A dangerous?
For most people Strep A is relatively harmless and symptoms can be managed with antibiotics. In some extreme cases it can cause a range of further complications that can be fatal.
Symptoms of Strep A
- Sore throat or pain when swallowing
- High temperature
- Swollen tonsils, sometimes with white patches or streaks of puss
- Swollen glands in the front of the neck
- Rash that feels like sandpaper
What should I do if my child is unwell?
