Infections of the Penis and Vagina
Bacterial infections can be sexually transmitted which may cause urethral burning and general discomfort in both men and women. These infections are highly infectious and may cause serious long-term complications like infertility. Some infections may even be able to cause damage to your unborn child.
If you have had unprotected sex, it may be worth doing some sexual health tests, as even without symptoms it is important to check for infections. The tests for bacterial infections are done through either a urine test or a swab. If there are traces of a bacterial infection, then a simple course of antibiotics should do the job.
Potential causes of both these bacterial infections include:
- Streptococcus infection
- Ureaplasma
- Mycoplasma
- Chlamydia & Gonorrhoea
- Thrush / Yeast Infection
- Trichomoniasis
- UTI from E-coli
If you have had unprotected sex there is a possibility that you may have contracted some form of infection, even without symptoms as some penis infections do not show symptoms for long periods of time.
However, here are some of the symptoms of a penis infection:
- Soreness and Redness
- Swelling and inflammation
- Burning and itching
Usually, the inflammation will take place under the foreskin, unless circumcised. Otherwise, another sign of a penis infection is discomfort during sex.
Vaginal Infections (Bacterial Vaginosis)
If you have had unprotected sex, even without resulting symptoms, it is still recommended that you get tested to insure that a serious vagina infection like that of chlamydia are avoided. These more serious bacterial vaginosis infections can go on to cause more serious health issues. If you are feeling an uncomfortable or unusual discharge, there is a possibility that you might have want to get an std test.
