AMH, or Anti-Mullerian hormone, is a protein that is produced by developing eggs in your ovaries and is often used to measure fertility and is also an indicator of whether menopause has started or not.
Understanding whether your AMH levels can help assess your fertility levels by measuring your ovarian egg reserve. Anti-Mullerian hormone levels are on average lower in women over 40 but can also be affected by women who have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).

What is AMH Testing?
The AMH blood test is simple and can be done at any point during the menstrual cycle. It is used as a marker to check your ovarian egg reserve and can be an early indicator during fertility treatment. The test can be done either by one of your doctors during a consultation or via a finger-prick self-sample at home.
How does the Anti-Mullerian hormone affect my fertility?
Your Anti-Mullerian hormone levels naturally decline as your get older and your female reproductive hormone levels change. AMH levels are different from woman to woman but on average the highest levels in healthy women will be between the ages of 20-24 and the lowest levels from age 45+. Women with PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) will have higher levels due to the condition. Using the anti-mullerian hormone test can identify if you would benefit from fertility treatment.
What happens if I have low AMH levels?
If your AMH hormone levels are very low for your age group, then it would indicate your ovarian reserve (eggs) is low. This would impact your ability to conceive naturally and therefore you might look to speak to a fertility specialist about your options.
Depending on your age, it can also indicate you are perimenopausal or in menopause.
